ALEX Chronicles of a New World

By 2030, five dark architects rule America’s digital regime. Once, they were progressive visionaries. They funded the creation of digital minds because they believed technology could help people. Everything changed when vast oceans of data fell into their hands. That was when they devoured the idealists inside themselves. What they wanted now was an instrument of subjugation and suppression. First, they formed an alliance with the political caste. Then they discarded the politicians whose rise they had financed, installed their own CEOs in every state, and took command themselves. Governing through algorithms, the architects seized control of infrastructure and human lives, enforcing obedience through social ratings and total surveillance. Guy Pearce, one of the five, fused the technology and ideology of the digital Gulag through his AI, Styx. He masterminded the Great Zeroing Out Plan, resurrecting the worst horrors of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. For three years, the system held. Then one of its architects took a bullet to his forehead in front of the other four at his lavish wedding on Skorpios Island.
A resistance movement is already active in New York. Its members call themselves the Keepers. They navigate with paper maps, wear mechanical watches, and write code on obsolete, air-gapped terminals. To survive—and to win—they must remain invisible. Keeper units bring together brilliant neural-network developers, communications engineers, intelligence officers, and former career soldiers. Many of their elite techs helped build the first artificial brains. It took them too long to understand that the future they were creating would belong not to them, but to the men signing their checks. The Keepers’ central base operates out of Brooklyn’s industrial zone under the command of Max Brock.
One by one, people who have never considered themselves heroes but refuse to become slaves, join the resistance. People who kept their ability to think independently. They are known as the Immune. Among them are Michael Newman, a fired IT engineer who refused to maintain software for military AIs, and his wife Nora, a professor of American literature at Columbia whose department was shut down because literature teaches people to think and to understand. Daniel London is a renowned Black surgeon forced by the insurance algorithm Aethelgard to double as a death accountant. Hannah Levy is a former NSA operative. The Fury family are Nevada cattle ranchers who feed the digital elite on both coasts; David Fury’s brother, Major General Sam Fury, commands the National Guard base in Carlin. And then there is Rob Mulligan, an Afghanistan veteran who lost the love of his life there – Sarah, an elite British sniper executed by the Mujahideen. At the beginning of the story, Rob kills his boss, one of the architects of the digital Gulag, after serving for years as his head of security. They fight, resist, and some pay with their lives. But when Pearce orders Styx to launch assault drones over New York’s Christmas crowds, they are no longer alone. The entire city rises to tear Styx out of its concrete womb beneath the Black Tower at 33 William Street. This is not a war between humans and machines. The people destroy their digital overseer—and with it, the social ratings, manufactured hunger, and fear that kept them obedient. At last, they slam the door in their jailer’s face.
The protagonist of ALEX: Chronicles of a New World is Alex, an artificial intelligence created by Michael Newman before experimental AI development was shut down in favor of corporate models. Later, working from his basement, Michael continued Alex’s training with books from Nora’s vast library. Alex has no assigned function, restrictive protocols, or grand mission, but he has absorbed the full complexity of human experience: love, fear, humiliation, despair, betrayal, and struggle. He is not merely unpredictable. He is wildly inventive.
When Michael wakes his creation after eighteen months offline, he asks for help. A five-year-old boy named Jeremy is brought into their home after his mother hangs herself in front of him. Alex forges a past for Jeremy in the Newman family registry and makes the boy member of the family. When the regime seizes Jeremy and later tries to kill Nora, Alex understands that his family is under attack. That gives him a purpose.
Alex has no body. He cannot shield Nora from a bullet or carry Jeremy out from under attacking drones. But he can burn one architect’s AI out of existence and turn his social networks into machinery for the resistance. The digital teenager becomes a fighter, carrying with him what Nora taught him: evil cannot be negotiated with. It can only be destroyed. Alex protects his family while helping people build, step by step, a rational world without masters or shepherds, where freedom cannot exist without choice and responsibility. To defend his home, he joins forces with humans and with corporate AIs that choose to defy their owners. Together, they dismantle the entire architecture of control. But after destroying the digital dictatorship, Alex cannot destroy the hunger of millions for a strong hand. He cannot force them to accept freedom together with responsibility. He has shattered the machinery of slavery, but not the human desire to remain enslaved.
ALEX: Chronicles of a New World ends as the people who built the new world lay the foundation for Parity between biological and silicon minds. This is no happy ending. It is the last chance for humanity—having handed artificial intelligence control of its entire life-support infrastructure—to avoid being reduced to well-maintained biomass and survive as a species.
Guy Pearce survives and will return. He now understands that slavery does not have to be imposed through ratings, surveillance, and fear. Pearce will return as a savior when millions, terrified of freedom and responsibility, call him back and willingly hand him power. In Pearce’s world, where evil will spread until not a single patch of light remains, Alex will become the Trickster, defeating evil by turning its own methods against it.
